Blue economy

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

Pollution free, what the world wants to be

The blue economy is a concept that seeks to enable sustainable use of oceans, rivers, lakes and other water resources for economic growth, improved livelihood and innovation through job creation.

The world keeps changing and with the advanced technology people have forgotten that natural water resources can serve as an income provider while sustaining us. We assume that only those who live close to large water masses can engage in activities such as fishing but we could all benefit from the water resources through small scale fish farming.

Hence the Government of Kenya with the National environment authority (NEMA) have been demolishing buildings that have been built on water catchment areas in order to restore the water resources.

The Blue economy also seeks to control the impact of climate change in the tropical areas and our adaptability to these changes. In the past year Kenya has had drastic climatic changes which have led to long periods of rain and floods which has led to destruction of life and property. We can try controlling the climate change by reducing pollution through carbon storage and reducing emission of harmful chemicals by production companies.

The Government of Kenya with NEMA has banned the use of plastic paper bags and introduced more environmental friendly bags. The UN Environment has also launched a major global campaign to end marine litter of plastics and garbage.

The Blue economy conference

It was hosted by Kenya, Canada, Japan and UNDP Kenya.

This was the first conference and it happened in Nairobi, Kenya from 26th -28th November where members from different countries around the world came to discuss how they would establish the Blue economy by 2030.

I was among the Volunteers who attended the conference, i met a lot of people from countries such as Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, Jamaica,Bahamas, India and others who i can't remember. It was very interesting and educational as they covered issues in the youth and women empowerment and the Blue economy. The Government of Kenya with the Ministry of health was providing free medical services which helped me a lot because i had my periods and the worst cramps which would have sent me home if they didn't come to my aid. The guests were treated well and complimented Kenyans saying"we are very down to earth."

I learned a lot during this conference but what i can't forget is this quote that was being repeated "if we take care of our environment, the environment will take care of us."
